Missy Elliott Drops First Project In 14 Years With 'Iconology' & New Video

2019 Essence Festival - Day 1

Misdemeanor is back!

After more than a decade away from the game, Missy Elliott made a surprise comeback with her long-awaited EP titled Iconology. The five-track project, which saw its official release Friday (August 23), arrived along with a colorful, creative visual only Missy could deliver for her new single "Throw It Back."

A total slap in every sense of the word, the bop pays homage to the 48-year-old's innovative mind being ahead of its time — a hip-hop history lesson, if you will, on who set the bar for music visualizations and paved inroads for those who followed in her footsteps.

"I raised all these babies, call me Captain Jack, sayin'/ Please don't steal my style, I might cuss you out/ What you doin' now, I did for a while," Missy sings in the opening verse, before warning listeners, "Don't look for another Missy/ 'cause there'll be no 'nother one."

It's been 14 years since the legendary musician dropped her last album, Cookbook, in 2005. Despite the delay, the project couldn't have come at a better time for the icon, who has been doing nothing but smelling the roses for all she's achieved.

Aside from becoming the first female rapper inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame and being honored with a doctorate degree from the Berklee College of Music, Missy is set to receive the Video Vanguard Award at MTV's Video Music Awards on August 26.
